Why Good Glazing Makes All the Difference

At Graham Harrison Framing, every detail matters. From the first cut of the moulding to the final polish before a piece leaves our workshop, each decision is made with the same care and craftsmanship that’s guided us for decades. And while mouldings and mounts often get the spotlight, one unsung hero quietly defines how a finished piece looks and lasts: the glazing.

A Clear View with Purpose

Glazing might seem like “just the glass,” but it’s far more than that. It’s the invisible layer that protects your artwork from dust, moisture, UV light and accidental knocks. It also determines how you see the piece whether it shines, reflects, or allows the artwork to breathe in its own light.

From day one, Graham’s approach was simple: do it properly, or don’t do it at all. That ethos extends to how we choose glazing. It’s not a finishing touch it’s part of the craft.

Matching the Glazing to the Artwork

No two pieces we frame are ever the same, so neither are the glazing choices.
We consider how and where your artwork will live:

  • A bright modern home with sunlight streaming in? We’ll recommend UV-filtering, anti-reflective glazing to prevent fading and glare.
  • A large commercial piece or exhibition print? Lightweight, shatter-resistant acrylic might be the better choice.
  • A delicate heritage print or original drawing? Conservation glazing ensures long-term protection without compromising clarity.

Each option has a character of its own just like the mouldings, mounts, and hands that build the frame.

Protection Meets Presentation

Good glazing balances two goals: to guard and to reveal.
It shields your piece from the world’s wear while letting every colour, brushstroke or texture shine through exactly as the artist intended. Poor glazing can add a green tint, distort the view, or reflect light so strongly you can barely see the art beneath.
Good glazing disappears, quietly doing its job.

Why We Care

We care about the long game. We’ve seen how the right glazing keeps a photograph vibrant for decades, how it protects a child’s drawing that later becomes a family heirloom. It’s about respect for the artwork, and for the person who treasures it.

When you collect your framed piece from our workshop in west London, we want you to love how it looks today and still love it in twenty years’ time.

The Finishing Touch

Every bespoke frame we make is built to last. The glazing you choose is part of that story an invisible signature of quality that keeps your piece safe, beautiful and true to itself.

If you’re curious about what glazing would best suit your artwork or environment, we’re always happy to talk it through. Because when every detail matters, even the invisible ones deserve our full attention.
